Two of the most common problems that people come to see a therapist for are anxiety and panic. These can be unpleasant at best and completely debilitating at worst. Pete Kerridge at Counselling Essex has extensive experience of helping people with anxiety and panic and uses a number of approaches to firstly help the person understand what lies beneath their anxiety and secondly to find the most appropriate ways to help them to resolve their difficulties and manage their emotions more effectively.

When working to deal with anxiety and panic, as well as looking to discover the underlying cause, the approach at Psychotherapy Essex is firstly help the person to manage their anxiety more effectively in the short term. Specific techniques will be taught to the client to help them feel less anxious. These will include relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, tailored visualisations that will support feeling more resourceful and calm, time planning and prioritization and identifying activities that will soothe and comfort when feeling anxious. To work towards resolving the underlying problems, Pete Kerridge will often use a technique called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). This is one of the treatments of choice recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but has also proved highly effective in the treatment of many other anxiety related conditions.
